Bushfire Photography: Masonite Road, Tomago New South Wales

“Courage is found in unlikely places.”

― J.R.R. Tolkien

On Sunday 14 January, I spent most of the day backburning and waiting to protect properties in the Grahamtown area next to Newcastle Airport. A severe weather warning gave us some good winds in the late afternoon and soon enough an emergency warning for Wade Close and surrounds, as well as many beautiful sights to behold. I pinch myself that I get to be a part of a genuinely caring service, the NSW Rural Fire Service, where everyone looks out for everyone else – and I see the community holds us and each other too.

“I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death.” – Leonardo Da Vinci
